Autumn

From the porch bathed in soft twilight,
I catch a glimpse of a sliver
of a moon in a rainbow-hued sky
and the stark outline of trees bereft of leaves
that casts long, interwoven shadows
upon the lawn littered with the lingering
remnants of summer. I marvel
at the quiet music of the stars
twinkling to a secret silent rhythm,
content in their single purpose.
They are unaware of the fear and vastness
of the huge unknown that looms
above and before me,
and in the serenity of falling night
I am undone.
